BioActive Kelp (liquid) has been independently tested to prove whether it definitely improves the Soil Foodweb or not. BioActive Kelp is proving to be a vital ingredient for compost tea brewing in Australian conditions. The scientific laboratory tests are backed up by field tests, which show that this is a distinctive and top quality product that gives "Excellent" compost tea testing results.

Freshly collected Bull Kelp (Durvillaea potatorum) is naturally processed in a unique low temperature process to retain the full nutritional value. The Bull Kelp is harvested from the pristine foreshores of Southern Australia where the purity of the Kelp is superior to northern hemisphere species. This kelp contains a veritable smorgasbord of trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, plant growth hormones and enzymes.

Incidently, we do not recommend growers apply or use powdered (dried) or seaweed freshly harvested from the shoreline on their soil or in their compost teas! (We have been asked about this.)

ASAP knows that BioActive Kelp (liquid) is the most efficient and cost effective way to apply the natural benefits of kelp to your soil.

This carefully selected liquid kelp is a natural organic plant growth stimulant and soil revitaliser. When used in compost tea or applied directly to the soil in an SFI Growers Programme manner, it will:
  • Revitalise soil and assist in the uptake of key nutrients
  • Increase microbial activity in the soil
  • Improve water retention
  • Promote root growth and vigour
  • Assist plant stress recovery
  • Reduce nutrient leaching

Application Rate
Soil: 5-7 litres of Purakelp per hectare.
Dilute with fresh, clean water prior to use.

For compost tea, contact ASAP with your BIOLOGY test to determine ingredient quantities. If you have no SFI Soil Biology Test, please note we recommend a range of BioActive Kelp (liquid) of between just 500ml per 1500 litres of compost tea, through to up to 10 times this amount for certain cold climates, crops or remediation while brewing.

We supply this product in 20, 200 and 1000 litre shipments.

Dr Elaine Ingham’s Research & Technical Advice

KELP
Plant material from dried kelp.

Kelp contains mineral components normally found in the proper balance for plant growth, in chelated forms.

If harvested green and rapidly dried, the product will contain bacterial foods in the form of simple sugars and proteins, and fungal foods such as cellulose and wide C:N materials. If harvested after the plant sets seed or goes dormant, then only the fungal foods are normally present. Kelp also serves as a surface for fungi and bacteria to grow on (as does any particulate material). Different kelps contain different mineral nutrients in varying ratios depending on water quality. Chemical analysis should be available from the seller (see below on kelp products) so the proper choices can be made to return the missing mineral components. Use the kelp which supplies the lacking nutrient in high enough concentration to make a difference, depending on what you need in your soil. The addition will need to be to the soluble pool if soil lacks the proper biology and to the exchangeable pool if the nutrient cycling sets of organisms are present. Possibly no addition may be required if the mineral rock material contains plenty AND the proper biology is present and functioning.

Determination of what is chemically missing requires soil chemistry assessment. If no biology is present, then the soluble soil chemistry pool must be amended, since that will be the only pool available for plant uptake. If biology is present, then an Albrecht, or exchangeable, pool assessment can be used, since there will be organisms to do nutrient cycling into plant available forms.

Different kelp species are known to contain very different sets of bacterial or fungal foods. They may contain an inoculum of bacteria and yeast which are adapted for marine habitats, not soil. Highly salty soils may have the same microbes, so in high EC soils, the biology needed can be enhanced. Most soils are not that salty. However some benefits have been observed by adding the species of salt-tolerant, and salt-utilizing microbes that could only have come from the kelp.

Thus kelp can be a very versatile product, supplying bacterial and fungal foods as well as the missing nutrients, if it is harvested, washed, and processed carefully with any eye to preserving all these potential benefits. A careful assessment of what each kelp product can do to the biology and well as what it might fix chemically is required.

Product:
BioActive Kelp (liquid)

Details of processing are not available.
An excellent product for a balanced chelated mineral nutrient addition with some bacteria as well as bacterial foods.

Biological Response: Active bacterial biomass was diminished while total bacterial biomass improved. While species of beneficial fungi improved, no improvement in fungal activity occurred. No protozoa were present in the control and thus were not present in the product. Effect on protozoa cannot be commented upon.
